Hillary Hall Case Study
If you ask three Democrats what they think about primaries, you’ll get four different answers. A primary race by nature pits friends and colleagues against each other, and costs time and money that are always in short supply. But primaries also help coax out from the pack the candidates with the most support and ability and the extended campaign time helps build name recognition. Primaries give us time to think about our ideals: who is the best person to hold office, who is the best person to beat the real opposition, and if those are two different people, how do we pick?
Hillary Hall called us when she ran in a primary for Boulder County Clerk. We don’t always throw our hat in the ring when it comes to primaries, but Hillary believed in us, and we believed in Hillary.
1st Step: Logo
The campaign asked for something clear and clean that would call to mind Hillary’s history of quality work. Hillary’s new logo adorned Business Reply Envelopes (BRE’s), letterhead and envelopes and some great business cards
2nd Step: Website
Hillary wanted her website to be a tool her supporters could really use. Designed with clarity and usability in mind, the website was updated weekly for the duration of the campaign. With up-to-date information about voter registration, precinct caucuses, voting locations and recent news, Hillary’s website proved to be a go-to resource for her Democratic primary voters.
3rd Step: Printed Promotional Items
Hillary was meeting plenty of voters at community events, and she needed print materials to help her leave a lasting impression.
4th Step: Media Outreach and Monitoring
With the campaign at a full boil it was easy to miss a news story about the campaign. Politics by Design monitored the media and local blogs for news pertaining to Hillary. Campaign staff got quick-to-read digests and were always up to date on the information they needed to plan the campaign.
5th Step: Get Out The Vote
The final step in a successful campaign — GOTV can be a lot to manage. There are more volunteers, more voters, more phone calls, more precincts to walk — more of everything! Politics by Design took the some of pressure off the staff and stepped in to help with final details including literature and web updates.
The result? A big win in a big primary. Hillary unseated the incumbent, handily won the general election and is now Boulder County Clerk.
